The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
